Empire Brass – Sleigh Ride

The Empire Brass has been one of the most popular American brass quintets. They have a reputation for virtuosic performances with impeccable quality. The Empire Brass has been active since 1972, touring, recording and commissioning new arrangements for brass quintet.

Listening Questions:

  • What instruments are the trumpet players using?

Look at the trumpets. Are they B Flat trumpets? If not, what are they? How can you tell?

  • Up stream or down stream?

Look at the trumpet players embouchures. Are they playing up-stream or down-stream? If that’s not a term you know, look it up on Google.

  • How do you make a horse sound?

At the end of Sleigh Ride, the first trumpet player always makes a horse sound on the trumpet. Looking at the video, can you see how Rolf Smedvig made that sound? Try it yourself when you figure it out!

Eddie Lewis posts these videos as listening assignments to his students. He often tells the students that “listening is more important than practicing”. To that end, he shares the videos so the students have something to inspire them to listen more often to professional trumpet players.

That said, if you are not one of Mr. Lewis’ students, we welcome you, too. The more the merrier! Welcome to EddieLewis.com. Feel free to post your comments and questions below.
