When David Heard is a Renaissance motet by Thomas Tomkins. It is the last of the transcription series that we are offering as a free download this month.
The idea behind the series was to create an opportunity to study counter point from within the original parts. That means, technically speaking, the brass works in this series are not arrangements. They are transcriptions.
Why does this matter?
Arrangers have a tendency to change the parts, for a variety of reasons. Some of it is good, some of it not. But all of it detracts from the original counterpoint melodies. So, as a way to study those melodies in a more intimate manner, I decided to transcribe Renaissance works being absolutely certain that the original melodic content remains intact.
This particular transcription is a favorite of the Texas Brass, who performs it almost every day in residence at the Texas Renaissance Festival.
