Alien Cyclops Pickles is based on a composition I wrote during my Jazz Improvisation class at Houston’s High School for the Performing Arts. I was the advanced jazz improvisation instructor at that school for most of the 90’s. In one of the classes I showed the students how to compose a jazz head. When it was done, I asked them to name the piece and they called it “Alien Cyclops Pickles”.

Alien Cyclops Pickles is probably the most serious piece on this Jazzy Trumpet Quarte Sheet Music list. It requires the students to be more advanced, skill wise, and even those student will need to rehearse the piece quite a bit to be able to perform it well.

Jingle Bells Jazz Trumpet Quartet Sheet Music PDF

Jingle Bell Jazz is a jazzy trumpet quartet which forces the melody of Jingle Bells into the harmonies of Cherokee. This was not just me trying to be clever. The original idea was to simply reharmonize Jingle Bells and write the arrangement based on those harmonies. But the more I dug into the reharmonization, the more I realized that it was very close to Cherokee. So I pushed it all the way over into that sound.

The Joy of the Lord Jazzy Trumpet Quartet

The Joy of the Lord Jazzy Trumpet Quartet is a composition with hints of New Orleans and some bluesy overtones. It tells the story of someone who is joyful in the lord, even though not everything seems to be going his way.

My favorite part of the piece is the ending when, after so much development with the previous theme, we just pick up a new theme to close the song out. The two themes work perfectly together.

No Concession Blues Trumpet Quartet

No Concession Blues is the first jazzy trumpet quartet I wrote for this series. It began as a lead sheet I wrote for my jazz group, Living Rhythms, to play at our performance at Cezanne’s Jazz Club. The idea to turn it into a trumpet quartet came later.

The title is supposed to be kind of funny, because the piece is not a blues. It’s actually based on Rhythm Changes, which some jazz theorists claim is loosely based on the blues, but still, it’s not a blues.

The theme of No Concession Blues is to acknowledge that people don’t get along and rarely agree on anything. It’s just as true for politics as it is for favorite foods, etc.
