Trumpet Trios
This page lists Eddie Lewis’ trumpet trios in alphabetical order. Trumpet trios are one of Eddie’s favorite instrumentations to write for. It is very free, but can still have a full sound. As of now (2024), Eddie has composed more trumpet trios than any other instrumentation larger than duets and his trumpet trios have become some of his most popular works.
Amazing Grace – Trumpet Trio
Amazing Grace
For Trumpet Trio
This Amazing Grace trumpet trio arrangement began as a request. I have been asking some people at church what their favorite hymns are so I can post my recordings of those hymns on my YouTube channel. When I asked my friend, Guy Cordell, what his favorite hymn was, he said it was Amazing Grace. He even told me a heart-warming story about why it’s his favorite hymn.
Since I already have several versions of Amazing Grace on my YouTube channel, I decided it would be a good idea to write this one out as a trumpet trio.

An Angel from Heaven Said to Me – Trumpet Trio
An Angel from Heaven Said to Me
For Trumpet Trio
Here is an easy trumpet trio composition that gives the students an opportunity to play for an extended duration without challenging their endurance too much. It uses a call and response technique that helps to insert rest into the composition. Not only does this give the trumpet players an opportunity to rest, but it also gives them brief solo moments for them to shine.

And Eat It, Too – Trumpet Trio
And Eat It, Too
A Proverbial Party
For Trumpet Trio
And Eat It, Too is my take on a cakewalk for three trumpets.
Cakewalk is a dance style that was popular in the 19th century. It began as a dance enjoyed primarily by slaves, here in America, but soon gained in popularity with many different cultures around the world. The cakewalk is something of a precursor to the ragtime style.
And Eat It, Too is one of many pieces I’ve written to utilize call and response as a way to insert excitement into the composition while also giving the musicians an opportunity to rest. A good junior high trumpet group would have no trouble with the endurance on this piece.
And Eat It, Too is easily one of our most popular trumpet trios.

At the Riverside – Trumpet Trio
At the Riverside
For Trumpet Trio
This is a trumpet trio that seems very easy when you look at it. It is mostly quarter-notes and half-notes and doesn’t go any higher than G above the staff. But the endurance this piece requires puts it at a much higher skill level than it looks. In terms of endurance, At the Riverside is one of our most difficult trumpet trios.
The piece is reminiscent of a riverside baptism. It is slow, peaceful, and gradually unfolds. It sounds like the slow water in the river making its way downstream.

Beware of Modern Oracles – Trumpet Trio
Beware of Modern Oracles
For Trumpet Trio
Beware of Modern Oracles is an experimental composition Eddie Lewis wrote during the infamous Covid 19 lockdowns. It utilizes a composition technique Eddie invented in the mid 90’s for a couple brass quintet compositions, but has never tried to use it for smaller instrumentations. Covid 19 lockdowns gave him the time and the motivation to make that happen.

Blue Standard – Beginner Trumpet Trio
Blue Standard
For Beginner Trumpet Trio
Blue Standard is a very simple blues song. It is easy enough for beginners to play. The highest note is second space A and the smallest rhythmic value is quarter-notes. The piece also gives each trumpet player enough rests so they can play all the way through even if they don’t have very strong embouchures yet. It is one of our easiest trumpet trios.
Beginner Compositions
Eddie Lewis believes it is important for students to start playing performable literature from the very beginning of their time as trumpet students. To that end, Lewis has been composing a number of solos, duets, trios and quartets for students with limited skills. He has written several beginner trumpet trios that sound like real music. That’s an important part of what he is doing with this music. These are not exercises. They are not dummied down arrangements. They are genuine compositions written for students of this lowest skill level.
The result is that the students have valuable performance experiences very early in their trumpet careers. We believe this ends up making big differences in their futures, not only as musicians but also as functioning members of society.

Chromazure – Beginner Trumpet Trio
Chromazure
For Beginner Trumpet Trio
Chromazure is a made up title contracting the word “chromatic” and “azure”, which is a work for blue. It describes this short, beginner composition as being a chromatic bluesy piece. It is perfect for introducing early students to the sounds of dissonance in their performances.
This composition is from Eddie Lewis’ new series of pieces designed for absolute beginners. The range is limited to C in the staff. Some of the compositions never even reach the C. The keys of the compositions in this series are never more than one flat or one sharp. The rhythms are always limited to quarter-notes, half-notes and whole-notes. The pieces are always very short compared to more advanced trumpet compositions, sometimes being as short as sixteen measures. Chromazure is a sixteen measure composition.
In this way, Chromazure is one of our easiest trumpet trios.

Come Shepherds Rise – Trumpet Trio
Come Shepherds Rise
For Trumpet Trio
Here is a Christmas trumpet trio that will bring a little variety to your music program. It begins with a traditional, pastoral feel and progresses in intensity until it reaches a fanfare based on the original Christmas carol. The difficulty, from one to seven, is at a high three or low four. This is an intermediate level. We would recommend it to good high school students and up.
Come Shepherds Rise was the first in what has become a growing series of Christmas trumpet trios.

Darkest Night Brightest Light – Trumpet Trio
Darkest Night Brightest Light
For Trumpet Trio
Darkest Night Brightest Light is third in a series of compositions using this original technique I invented in the mid 90’s. This is a composition technique I invented in the mid 90’s for brass quintet and never attempted to use that technique for smaller instrumentations until now.
I like the music I’ve been writing lately (over the past ten years), up until this experimental series. It is more wholesome and beautiful. And who doesn’t like beautiful music? But it doesn’t challenge me as much intellectually. So it’s nice to do some of this kind of more modern writing again.

Easy Christian Suite – Trumpet Trio
Easy Christian Suite
Easy Trumpet Trio
Five Movements
This is the first set of trumpet trios I ever composed for beginners. I specifically composed these trios for a group I put together of home school trumpet players. My son, Alex, was one of the trumpet players in the group.
These were students who had very limited experience on the trumpet. They were home schooled students, so they didn’t have the same daily teaching that most kids in school get. We spent an hour per week working on these pieces and by the end of the semester they were ready for a concert. This was within a year of when they first began playing trumpet.

Fishing Suite: Tackle Suite
Tackle Suite
For Trumpet Trio
Tackle Suite is from a suite of suites with fishing themes. Bait Suite is the first of the suites, followed by Tackle Suite and Catch Suite. Each of these trumpet trios utilizes a different style of modern composition.
Tackle Suite uses scales and harmonies derived from triad pairs. As a compositional technique, triad pairs are not a new thing. They have been around for almost a hundred years. I have been using them in my compositions since I first learned about them, about thirty years ago. I do believe that the way I use them is probably very different from what most other composers have done.

The three movements in Catch Suite are polytonal. Each part has a unique key signature. The relationship between the keys varies from movement to movement. Hark the Herald Angels Sing – Trumpet Trio
Hark the Herald Angels Sing
Original Melody by Felix Mendelssohn, Arr. Eddie Lewis
A Modern Treatment of a Beloved Christmas Carol
For Trumpet Trio
Hark the Herald Angels Sing is one of our most modern sounding Christmas trumpet trios. I posted a recording of this arrangement on my YouTube channel as part of our Christmas celebration in 2018. One of the comments we received describes the arrangement perfectly. The comment said “Sounds more like Paul Hindemith”.
Exactly! I am using what would be considered “twentieth-century techniques” in this arrangement. I wasn’t thinking of Hindemith when I wrote it, but the techniques are definitely more like what he would have written than something Mendelssohn would have written.

Journey After Journey – Beginner Trumpet Trio
Journey After Journey
For Beginner Trumpet Trio
Journey After Journey is another trio from our Trumpet Pioneer series of trumpet compositions. These are trumpet compositions intended to give the earliest beginners a legitimate opportunity to perform. The compositions are genuine performance pieces with truly creative content. It should be easy enough for the beginners to perform (with some rehearsal and personal practice) but also interesting for the audience as well. In Journey After Journey, the highest note is written C in the staff. The rhythms are limited to quarter-notes, half-notes and whole-notes. And the key is in B flat concert. The composition is a bit longer than most of our other beginner compositions, but each player is given plenty of opportunities to rest. The most difficult part of learning this piece is that there are places where each trumpet player must enter independently from the others. I call this “rhythmic independence” and is the main educational focus of this piece.

Joy to the World – Trumpet Trio
Joy to the World
Trumpet Trio
They say that it is dangerous to write the way I do. People have difficulty pinning my style down because I’m all over the map. I can write extraordinarily simple compositions and arrangements. But then I can also write music that is overly complex. When it comes to Christian music, I tend to write simple music, but this arrangement of Joy to the World is actually a little jazzy.
For this arrangement, I barrow syncopated rhythms from the clave, which is the underlying meter for both salsa and second line swing. That’s what makes this arrangement interesting. It’s not swing. It’s not jazzy. But it has a poppy feel to it that your audiences are going to love.
Joy to the World is not the only one of our trumpet trios to utilize clave rhythms. Keep an eye out for some of the others.

King Sigmund’s Victorious March – Easy Trumpet Trio
King Sigmund’s Victorious March
Easy Trumpet Trio
King Sigmund’s Victorious March is named after one of our four cats, Sigi. Sigi was sick when he was a kitten and my wife, Pearl, took very good care of him. He recovered from his illness and I was inspired to write a march to commemorate it.
This is a march for beginners in our second level (of 7 skill levels). It is partly educational in that we are giving the students an opportunity to practice and perform music in cut time. This is slightly more difficult than other easy cut time pieces we’ve published for the beginners in that it utilizes eighth-notes.
In my system of teaching beginners, I use eighth-notes in cut time to introduce the students to sixteenth-notes. In that way, the eighth-notes in cut time are a very important bridge from beginner music to intermediate.

Mary Did You Know – Trumpet Trio
Mary, Did You Know?
Trumpet Trio
Tug people’s heart strings with this trumpet trio arrangement of the popular Christmas song, Mary Did You Know. This is a no-nonsense arrangement. Very simplistic and absolutely true to the original recordings.
Of all the modern Christmas songs, Mary Did You Know is the one that seems to have the same kind of appeal that the traditional Christmas carols have had over the years. It has a powerful story line and beautiful melody and it’s most likely everyone at your Christmas event is going to recognize it. Whether it is for a church function or a Christmas mall concert, people are going to recognize the tune and enjoy it.
Eddie Lewis wrote this trumpet trio arrangement in response to a request from one of his adult students. The student expressed a desire to bless his neighbor with a recording of him playing her favorite Christmas song. The student mentioned it to Eddie and the project went on to his to do list.

Ode to My Savior – Beginner Trumpet Trio
Ode to My Savior
Beginner Trumpet Trio
Give your beginner trumpet students a chance to shine with Ode to My Savior Beginner Trumpet Trio.
I have said this in the description for other pieces, but it’s worth mentioning again. I believe that trumpet students should begin performing from the start of their careers. The problem with this belief is that there isn’t much good music written for the beginners to perform. Most of what is published is “dumbed down” and doesn’t sound like real music.
I have been trying to fill that cap by composing pieces for the beginners that I would be proud to perform in public. My objective with these compositions is to write music that sounds like real music, but functions within the limitations of the beginners’ trumpet skills.
My first compositions of this nature were the three bird solos, Bird March, Feathered Friends and The Purple Parrot (which I let my then current students name). One of those students performed the Bird March solo at a school assembly only three or four months after she started playing the trumpet.
That student eventually quit trumpet to pursue a busy performance career in theater (she was an elementary school student) but performing the Bird March for her fellow students is a memory she will always fondly look back on.
That is part of why performing early in the learning process is so important. You don’t know when students will continue, and which ones will not. For those students whose trumpet careers end up being no longer than a year, the one or two performances they have in that year are all they will have to look back on. Unfortunately, those who do not perform at all will only ever remember the drudgery of pointless practice and rehearsals.
But there’s more to my early performance philosophy than just that. For those students who do continue their trumpet careers for many years, the earlier performances have a mental benefit that cannot be replaced in any other way. Their future progress on the trumpet is greatly enhanced by each performance they present in the first two years of their trumpet careers.

On His Word – Easy Trumpet Trio
On His Word
Easy Trumpet Trio
On His Word is one of several original, easy trumpet trios I wrote for my son’s home school trumpet ensemble. I wrote music for that group because the easy trumpet sheet music available did not meet my specific teaching requirements. For those who know me, I try not to waste time writing stuff that is already available for purchase (unless someone is paying me to do so, ha ha!). There was a huge gap in the available music for beginner students and I filled that gap out of necessity.
The educational focus of On His Word is the application of the chromatic scale. This is part of my teaching method. After the students learn the chromatic scale, I like to have them apply what they’ve learnt in a musical context.

So it can be programmed as a Christmas piece. That’s why we decided to put a Christmas scene on the cover.

Something Better is a call and response trumpet trio for beginner trumpet students who have been playing trumpet for about six months. The highest note in the first part is fourth line D. This will shorten the piece for purposes of endurance and/or program timing issues.
