Second Parts

The most important aspect of the Unadorned Hymn Duets book is the second parts. The first parts are directly from the hymnal. You can get those melodies for free at dozens of different websites online. What you can’t get anywhere online are my second trumpet parts.

These second parts have harmonies that stay true to the original chords of the hymn, but sound far, far better than just playing the alto part or the tenor part. The second parts are awkward sometimes. That awkwardness is always for a reason and the end result is a wonderful second part that beautifully compliments the melody of the original hymn.

Unadorned Hymn Duets Cover Art

My wife, Pearl, does all of our book covers. The concept for Unadorned Hymn Duets comes from my memories of living in El Paso. El Paso is in the Chihuahuan Desert. Houses and walls are often built from local materials. Where here in Houston we have wood fences, in El Paso almost every house has brick walls around their yards.

Although I have never actually seen a cross made of stone while living in El Paso, I thought that would be a beautiful concept for a cover. And Pearl did a wonderful job putting that concept into action.

But there is more to the story about the cover art than just the concept…

My Illness

I recently went into the hospital for two emergency room visits in the space of six weeks. Apparently, I had been gradually getting sick for many years. In the last few weeks of working on Unadorned Trumpet Hymns, I was having some really bad nights.

When things got really bad, I would pull up the image Pearl sent me for the cover and sit at my desk, staring at it and praying. Sometimes I would start off praying, but then trail off into a painfilled numbness.

In those final weeks of my illness, my productivity was greatly reduced. Unadorned Hymn Duets was the only project for which I seemed to be able to get anything done. This book will always remind me of how sick I became and how wonderful it fills to be well again. Praise God!
