Trumpet Meditations

18 Improvisations by Eddie Lewis

The Journey

The opening track to Trumpet Meditations (titled “Morning Prayer”) begins our musical journey with our protagonist stepping outside of his home. A dense fog is in the air and the ground is covered with dampness. The world is quiet as he meditates on the travels set before him.

With track two, When You Walk in the Forest, our friend has begun the first leg of his journey, a musical trek through the dense trees. There’s very little light, but the light he does see encourages him to continue forward. He is acting in hope. Moving forward in faith. He doesn’t know how he will get where he’s going. He doesn’t know what problems he will face along the way. But for now, his spirits are high and he is looking forward to the adventure.

Track three, Peaceful and Still, depicts our friend clearing the forest into the first full sunlight of his journey. Now he chooses to sit on a large stone and bask in the sunlight and rest before he continues.

Track four has our friend walking through his first town. The track is named after this town, Vanilla Flats, a place where farmers meet to trade there goods and socialize with the other farmers while they are there. Our friend says howdee as he makes his way through town, but doesn’t stop. He’s only passing through.

In track five, our friend gains a traveling companion who tells him a number of unbelievable stories. New Phoenix Wings is one of those stories. Our friend listens while he shakes his head. “How can this be?” he asks. But no, the companion swears to the truth of his statements, no matter how impossible they sound. He was there to see it all with his own eyes.

Our friend is now wondering, “will he experience such marvelous sights on the path ahead?”

In track six, No AC Blues, our friend is robbed and the bandits have stollen all his food. He had a full backpack of Arctic Char. Now it’s all gone, and he doesn’t know what he’s going to do for food.

In track seven, our friend happens upon a prince who’s name is Inkosana. He is a majestic prince with plenty of food to spare. The two of them journey together while their paths head in the same direction. They become quick friends and only part ways when there is no other option. Their parting was a sad one.

Track eight, Folk You Know, Folk You Don’t, sees our friend needing to sort through the advice of strangers. He questions why things can’t just be simple. He knows strangers cannot be trusted. He pines for the advice from the friends he left far behind.

Where do you see this journey going from here. What adventures do you see in your mind while listening to these tracks?

About the Meditations

This Trumpet Meditations album is a collection of sixteen recordings of free improvisations by Eddie Lewis. When Eddie makes these recordings, they are 100% spontaneous. Nothing is planned. Nothing is rehearsed. The recordings have a natural, compositional flow to them which sounds as if they were pre-composed. While Eddie is an accomplished composer, these improvisations were only created on the fly, as they were being recorded.

Eddie’s free improvisation style is quite different from other musicians who do this sort of thing. Most of what he creates in his improvisations sounds like modern classical music. Most people who record improvisations on the trumpet create what we call Avant-Garde, a style for which Eddie has plenty of experience performing, but his creativity really shines with the more conservative styles.

That said, there are some improvisations on this album that were done in a swing style. Eddie is an accomplished jazz musician and it only makes sense that the swing stuff would appear now and again.
