Record Lifts
A lot of bands don’t want creative and interesting arrangements because it’s not appropriate for their gigs. If you are doing weddings or corporate gigs, you should probably be playing the songs in a way that the audience immediately recognizes. Writing the music for those types of gigs is called transcribing – or as we say on the streets, “record lifts.”
Writing record lifts or transcriptions is an entirely different art from writing arrangements. The arranger must listen to the recording and write parts for the band that will sound as close to the original recording as possible. People who are good at arranging are not also automatically good at record lifts.
Decades of Experience
Eddie Lewis has been writing lifts since the mid 1980’s. He has transcribed music for funk bands, top forty bands, country and western, church praise and worship groups, salsa bands and even some classical stuff.

Not Competitive
Unfortunately, Eddie Lewis’ prices for doing record lifts are not competitive. There are a lot of young, student age musicians who do this kind of work for part time income. Those students have the luxury of charging rates that are far lower than ours. Eddie has to charge the same hourly rate for record lifts as he does for writing full fledged arrangements.
If you think Eddie might be too expensive for your project, give him a buzz anyway and he will help connect you to a student who is eager to do that sort of work.
The following is a list of some local bands that have hired Eddie Lewis to do record lifts:
- David Caceres
- The Grooves (out of Austin)
- Johnny Gragg
- TKOh! (formerly Cold Sweat)
- Maria Williams
