Houston Trumpet Player
Houston trumpet player, Eddie Lewis is one of the local top call players. He has been active in the Houston music community since 1988, performing in bands of all genres that are applicable to trumpet. He is a well rounded, versatile musician and has equal respect for all types of music.
As a jazz musician, Eddie considers his trumpet playing to be one of several voices in the ensemble. He prides himself on being able to listen for context of style, harmony and dissonance levels and performs appropriately. For that reason, he is just as comfortable performing in Houston’s ten piece jazz orchestra, Jazz Forever, as he is working with the free/avant-garde guys in town.
Eddie is also classically trained and has reasonable experience performing in brass ensembles like the Texas Brass and orchestras. This diversity of styles opened the door for him to perform with a great variety of commercial and ethnic bands over the years. He is just as comfortable performing klezmer and salsa music as he is performing with a big band.
The following is a list of services Eddie offers as a trumpet performer:
Jazz Trumpet Soloist
Eddie regularly performs as a guest soloist with school jazz ensembles and professional big bands. He has been a featured soloist with high school and junior college bands in Houston and El Paso. Sometimes the bands perform Eddie’s compositions. Other times he jams with the students on the music they already know.
Classical Trumpet Soloist
Eddie has also performed as a soloist in a variety of classical settings, including a performance of J. S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2. He is most well known as a jazz and/or commercial trumpet player, but he is equally comfortable in front of an orchestra or symphonic band. One year Eddie even wrote the orchestration for the Vivaldi composition he was featured on with the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra (Pasadena, Texas).
Eddie’s Bands
Eddie Lewis is the leader of several Houston area ensembles. He is currently the leader of Consort Immanuel, Living Rhythms and The Blue Gnus. Consort Immanuel is a classical chamber music organization that performs God centered music. Living Rhythms is Eddie’s jazz combo which performs mostly his original jazz compositions. The Blue Gnus is an educational jazz combo which does primarily school concerts that teach jazz history.
Recording Sessions
Eddie recorded his first jingle in the mid 1980’s and has been active as a session trumpet player ever since. He is on dozens of CDs, including a number of his own. Eddie is even on a CD that won a Grammy in the Tejano category, Chicanismo by Little Joe. Eddie is also on probably hundreds of jingles and TV spots, too many to list.
Sideman Gigs
The majority of Eddie Lewis’ work as a trumpet performer has been with other people’s bands. He has all of the appropriate skills to play most types of gigs.
