Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets
Hello trumpet players!
Thank you for visiting Eddie Lewis’ website and checking out our Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets page. You can look at this project and its future book as a sequel to Eddie’s Trumpet Hymn Duets book, which is currently, by far, our most popular book. He is following the same principles that guided him on the Trumpet Hymn Duets book to create these Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets!
What are those principles?
There were two guiding principles that lead to the Trumpet Hymn Duets. The first was that Eddie wanted to remain true to the harmonies of the original hymns. In fact, the very first thing he does when he writes one of these arrangements is to do a traditional harmonic analysis of the hymns (and carols). He does it in the traditional music theory notation, just like you would learn to do at music school.
Those are the harmonies Eddie uses for these arrangements. He does not reharmonize the hymns or the carols. Not for this series. Eddie is quite capable of more complex harmonic applications, but he wanted to write these duets in a way that is 100% appropriate for traditional church services.
The other guiding principle in writing these arrangements is honoring the original mood (and style) of the hymns and carols. The most adventurous Eddie get’s in these arrangements is to add some fanfare sections or subtle counterpoint. There are no jazz treatments, no odd meter adaptations, no striking modern compositional techniques.
Once again, this is because he wants the arrangements to be appropriate for traditional church services.
Christmas Carols at Home or at Church
Just because these Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets are 100% appropriate for church does not mean that they are inappropriate anywhere else. You can play them for pleasure with your friends. You can play them by yourself using Eddie’s You Play First Chair trumpet play-along videos. You can play them on gigs at malls and other places that have trumpets for Christmas.
Eddie has played literally hundreds of trumpet Christmas carol duets gigs. This is actually a thing! Every year, people around the city are hiring trumpet duets to play Christmas carols for their events or to provide background music at malls and things like that. Eddie Lewis has performed Christmas carol trumpet duets at country clubs, church events, church services, hotels, parks, and even at the beach.
These Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets are perfect for all of that and much more.
The Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets
We will list all of the Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets below. We are starting this page in October of 2021 and beginning the list with only one trumpet duet. We will keep this page updated whenever new duets are added. We expect there to be at least four of them written this year (2021), God willing.
Angels from the Realms of Glory
The reason this Christmas carol was published in our first Trumpet Hymn Duets book is because it is also a standard hymn when sung with other lyrics. But many of you know that this is one of the most popular Christmas carols.

Angels We Have Heard on High
My favorite part of this arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High is not immediately apparent. It’s something that makes the duet fun to play but is almost lost on the audiences. I use a cascading device on the refrains that becomes more elaborated with each new verse. If you watch the fingers in the video, you’ll see that the individual parts cascade over each other.

The First Noel
The First Noel is the first trumpet duet in this Christmas carol series. This is ironic because it is one of two Christmas carol duets Eddie was not looking forward to writing. It’s not that he doesn’t like The First Noel as a Christmas carol. But compositionally speak, its awkward. The refrain is almost the exact same melody as the verse. As an instrumental piece, it tends toward monotony.
But it was on his list because enough people requested it, even his adult student, Bob Zapf. In fact, the reason why Eddie wrote this one first is because Bog is recording it with his trumpet friend.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is number 15 in the series. It begins with a short fanfare and a simple statement of the theme. The second verse presents the theme in canon. The third verse begins in octaves.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Hark the Herald Angels Sing is number five in this new Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets series. It’s slightly easier than the other duets in the series, so far. The arrangement sticks very close to the original Christmas carol.
But that’s what we are trying to do with both this and the Trumpet Hymn Duets series. We even included a quote on the back of the Trumpet Hymn Duets book that said, “These are hymns first, trumpet duets second.” We are continuing this as our primary objective for the Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets as well.

In the Bleak Midwinter
In the Bleak Midwinter was the most requested trumpet carol duet before I wrote it. Musicians like this song a lot and I was happy to do an arrangement of it.
It was a little difficult to write this trumpet duet arrangement because of the harmonies and the range of the trumpet. When I first sat down with the hymn to get started, I literally said out loud, “What am I going to do with this?”
But it worked and I’m happy with the results.

Joy to the World
Make merry with your trumpet buddies with this new arrangement of Joy to the World. This is one of those arrangements that takes the main motifs of the melody and mixes and matches them. The arrangement is reminiscent of Sammy Nestico’s style.
Joy to the World is easily one of the most popular Christmas carols ever written. There are a great many great arrangements, even for trumpet duet. Our objective here was to give you more of the Christmas carol, and less of the arrangement. I know you have already read this elsewhere on this page, but we use the original harmonies and try to keep all of the arrangements in this Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets series as close to the original mood of the carol as possible.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
While the trumpet duets on this page are part of a congruent series, this one breaks from that congruency ever so slightly. The idea behind this series is to continue with the same format that lead to the Trumpet Hymn Duets series. This is a more conservative approach to arranging that produces some beautiful music.
This trumpet duet arrangement of Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence began as one of my experimental compositions. When I realized it was leaning towards the melody of the Christmas carol, I decided to continue with the “experiment”.
I normally would not include experimental music in my Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets series, but the harmonic approach enhanced the arrangement so well that I decided to include it.

O Come All Ye Faithful
O Come, All Ye Faithful is number fourteen in our Christmas carol trumpet duet series. It is one of the simplest duets in the series, not because I had any difficulties coming up with any ideas, but because that’s how the arrangements sounds to me.
I did add a modulation and some fanfare material is weaved throughout the arrangement. But other than that, it is a very simple piece.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel
I’ve been telling people that this arrangement was difficult to write because my previous trumpet trio version of this Christmas carol was still resonating in my mind. The way I broke from that was to dig even deeper into the objective of this series. I’ve said this before on this page, but it’s worth repeating. The objective of these duets and the original Trumpet Hymn Duets is to honor the harmonies and moods of the original hymns/carols.

Oh, Holy Night
This is number five in our Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets series. Oh, Holy Night was one of the more difficult duets for me to write because I couldn’t hear anything useful in my mind’s ear. It took me over six weeks to get this one finished.
I was reluctant to work on arrangement of Oh, Holy Night because I knew it would be difficult to write a meaningful duet on this Christmas carol. As I dug into the arrangement process, I discovered another problem. The form on this Christmas carol is a long one. To do the entire form twice was going to be a problem for a duet.
I originally had two verses in this arrangement, but I couldn’t make it work. Not so much for endurance reasons, but more compositionally speaking. What I ended up doing was blending the first and second verses into one single verse.
In the end, I think it works well. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Silent Night
Stay close to the original sound of Silent Night in this trumpet duet arrangement. I’ve written at least half a dozen arrangements of Silent Night. It is, after all, one of the most popular Christmas carols around the world. But my other arrangements were “clever” and “creative”. The goal of this Trumpet Christmas Carol Duets series is to be creative but to do so without departing too far from the mood and harmonies.

What Child Is This
Of the trumpet duets in the Trumpet Christmas Carol Duet series so far, this arrangement of What Child Is This (Greensleeves) is the most beautiful. The first verse is a simple statement of the theme, following the same structure I use in the Unadorned Trumpet Hymn and Unadorned Trumpet Carol series. The second tosses the melody back and forth between the two trumpets while the other trumpet plays an accompaniment, arpeggio pattern.
